In ancient times there was a proscription against a samurai killing in anger. If one kills someone, (which is terrible, of course), you should do it not because of anger – but because you are forced to. I think the same applies to the notion of helping others; don’t do it because you feel sensitivity, (even if you do) – do it because you feel it is poetically humane, it contributes to the world, it makes sense, it fits.
